Cement Keyboard Street Installation Project 2012

A New Cement Keyboard Street Installation has hit NYC in early 2012. Technology is ephemeral, and maybe more so than we think. We are co-dependent on it, and feel a certain kind of discomfort when it is not accessible (Have you ever, or recently lost your mobile phone, or had your internet access turned off?) This installation project is a metaphor for that, while examining several ways to extend and communicate with its energy. The keyboards are cast in a variety mediums, but in this specific installment, it is cement. The molds are then fractured. They are not usable in any way, yet the viewer resonates with the works as they pass them. In a strange and not so sensual way keyboards unify us as human beings, and the context of this unification is only in its infancy.

This is Chalk board bombing, it is an act of ephemeral immediacy, the ultimate temptation for self expression with drawing. This drawing may last 5 minutes, or it may be buffed by the next person that passes by. I never know. What I do know is this, if the chalk board is blank, I’m going to hit it, record it, and share it. All in under 5 minutes. Chalk board bombing dates back to early 2000. Most of those drawings have been lost in transition, or buried on external drives. I am doing the research to find them and share them here. I will post the archived and current works here as well.

NEW Installation 10/3/2009

Originally uploaded by The ART of Ryan Seslow Retrospective.
Over stimulation as Energy:

My new installation at the Brother Chapman Gallery is a part of the Iona College Art department faculty exhibition. As a professor I have been teaching studio art courses at Iona for 5 years now. I am grateful to have had my colleagues agree to letting me use a corner space to install this large piece! I am overstimulated, I admit it. I also admit that I love that part of me. Over stimulation which was once stated be to be hyperactive seems to have transcended itself nicely. I cant blame the doctors of the 1970′s who’s misdiagnosis of my early symptoms of radical creativity were something else…I think I will send them this image, as well as some of the other images in this series. I am interested in fragments. As a subject matter and also as an exploring muse for content. Fragmentation has a strong association to the context of things being Modular. Many parts must come together or function together to make up a whole. My installation is perhaps a linear sequence of my unconscious mind’s time-line of repeated mental images. I hold or have held onto these images for reasons both known and unknown. Some of these reasons are purely aesthetic to the core of their traditional principles. Line, color, shape, texture, and value. While others appear to be objective at first glance, their placement suggests otherwise. The composition is an intuitive energy. The installation process has not any set plan. The works are laid out on the floor. An urgency sets in, a creative impulse to compose while liberating the imagination and the unconscious. The process can and will be recorded as performance based art in the future. The unconscious mind is our main operating system, it handles most of the body’s biological functions, we don’t think about them much. We just expect them to work. I have cultivated a new faculty, and this process into a habitual ritual with my imagination. The idea was to synthesize the intuition, the unconscious mind and the imagination to create a harmonious series of actions. The actions result in a large scale mental collage of the past, present and future of my human experience while using traditional forms of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, video & installation. Although the video monitor can not be seen in this particular image, a series of video works were created for the installation as well. For those who come to see the works in person the monitor is located to the far left of the installation. The narrative of the work is ongoing and subject to redefinition, unconsciously!

“Brooklyn Art Project is home to thousands of artists, art enthusiasts, and creative professionals from around the world. BAP was created as an experiment to see what would happen if we built a community of artists, designers and creatives to connect and collaborate in ways never before possible through social media. BAP’s fast growth and collaborative exhibitions with the Brooklyn Academy of Music andBurning Man to name a few, have proven the experiment extremely worthwhile and opened up a new channel for artists everywhere to have their work seen. One BAP member artist summed it up best saying “BAP made me brave”. Named one of HOW Magazine’s top sites, BAP showcases 45,000+ artworks and hosts ongoing collaborative projects. Monthly Brooklyn-based exhibitions provide opportunities for emerging artists from around the world a chance to be featured in a Brooklyn art show. BAP was launched in 2007 by brothers (and native New Yorkers) Anthony and James Cospito, who also run Strut NYC, an award winning design and social media strategy firm.”  Visit Brooklyn Art Project

9/09 “Transcending Situational Potential” A film by Ryan Seslow

2009 : Run Time: 15:03 : Written, Directed, & Produced by Ryan Seslow : Michael Perinelli as Professor Universe, Ryan Seslow as The Fragmented Personality : Original Music by Brigitte Boardman

Synopsis: Professor Universe, considered purely brilliant by some, and by others, a raging quack. The professor activates his audience through        ” technology based interventions.” He claims, ” The modern day student will find all of their teachers, and find them well.” He talks us through a seemingly benign series of self identity issues related to one’s own perceptual personality. Short lectures are followed by fragmented art forms that seem to be symbolic, controversial, and indeed overstimulating. Professor Universe declares that the synthesis of these visual and auditory actions create an unconscious formula. The formula itself is known to activate a new level of human awareness and creative potential.

New Drawings in 2009

Originally uploaded by The ART of Ryan Seslow Retrospective.

New Drawings: Plans for Public Sculpture in 2009
8-14-2009

I’m excited to announce a new project in Public Sculpture. I’m not going to leak all the details, but here is a rough sketch of one of the pieces above. Your going to have to use you imagination a bit to conceive the colors and materials. These are large works, intended to compliment specific landscapes. OK, so Below are some more links to view the other plans as well. I’m excited and inspired by these drawings. Even though a lot of my work is sculptural and installation based, intuition and immediacy sometimes needs to be backed up by something semi-tangible like a drawing. Drawing about seeing. When the minds eye ” sees ” something non physically we depend on the skill and action of drawing to bring our idea to life, even if it is in its infancy. If you can devote yourself to creating one small sketch or a drawing each day, you will watch the birth of many of your ideas coming to life. By doing this, you are consciously instructing the brain and your consciousness to be on the look out for new ideas. Practice makes perfect, but practice also puts your subconscious mind to work, the subconscious builds habits for you! Drawing is a good habit to have as an artist, or even as one who appreciates art and the art of ideas.

The Affluent Artist Philosophy

“Creative people are a different breed. If you’ve spent your life dedicated to your craft, to putting your gift out there, you might not have taken the time to learn all the money stuff. The Affluent Artist™ has come to terms with money and recognizes that it is an ally, another tool to further your creation. Financial Independence allows you to become your own patron, to create without monetary conflict. We at the Affluent Artist (TM) are dedicated to helping you learn the money stuff, to helping you welcome abundance, to helping cut through the Wall Street Jargon. We believe that God has a special love for creative people, after all, that is his line of work!” Rick DiBiasio

There is such a feeling of impending seasonal change here in Tel Aviv. Inspiration comes in with the spring & for the third year, the INSPIRE Collective asks you to show off some inspiration! It’s during these pre-spring months, for the last few years, that we really get working and organized in order to time the show with these weather and seasonal changes as a type of metaphor for inspiration. Join us this year and show off what inspires you!!! It must be noted that most artworks received will be installed and shown in one public location in the streets of urban Tel Aviv. As the weather turns really great here in May,please keep in mind when preparing your works, that this is an outdoor event and the Middle Eastern desert sun should be taken into account. Artworks are recommended to be durable (not easily broken) and somehow protected from the sun during the exhibition’s duration. The last two years of hosting the Inspiration Art Exhibition here in the Middle East have been a great success & each year the size of participating artists and appreciators are growing!
(Video, press, and updates about the show’s developments will be posted in the INSPIRATION 3 group. www.flickr.com/groups/inspiration3/ discussion threads as they happen!)

Video Synthesis to be Screened in The Netherlands April 2009

4-10-2009

Updates.

Ryan Seslow’s Curatorial Debut “Video Synthesis” will be screened as a part of The Streaming Festivals first Special Programs Exhibition: “Fragments” takes place in The Geborgen Kamers Gallery, The Hague, Netherlands. Opening: 15 April 2009 – the screening starts at 20.00. The screening continues on 16 and 17 April 2009

Fragments brings together video work that in some way address the idea of fragmentation, whether through visual technique or concept. Several films in this selection focus on the object of the photograph -a reminiscent of a fraction of time and memory. Others are based on the structural elements of film making such as the close up shot and abstraction as the basis.

This selection is the curator’s response the truly eclectic collection of works from three editions of Streaming Festival database. Therefore, the concept of Fragments becomes an ambiguous expression in this context simultaneously symbolizing a fragment of the Streaming Festival collection as well a metaphor for fragmentation of images and ideas.

The second program: Video Synthesis screened in the Geborgen Kamers has been composed by Ryan Seslow.

Video Synthesis is an examination of the Inter-relationships of Video Art, Performance, Experimental Film, & Vanguard Documentary. The purpose of this exhibition is to survey, expose, and raise the awareness of motion related art through the medium of video. The works exhibited have all been created using a digital video camera and computer based editing software as a means of expression and communication.

” Video Synthesis ” Curated by Ryan Seslow, Is now ONLINE!

banner

In the spring of 2008 I was invited to curate an all video art based exhibition for the permanent collection at the Queensborough Community College Art Gallery, CUNY. I am happy to announce that the exhibition can now be viewed in its entirety online. The exhibition can also be viewed in the galleries media room upon request.

“Video Synthesis” is an examination of the Inter-relationships of Video Art, Performance, Experimental Film, & Vanguard Documentary. The purpose of this exhibition is to survey, expose, and raise the awareness of motion related art through the medium of video. The works exhibited have all been created using a digital video camera and computer based editing software as a means of expression and communication. It was my intention to select a diverse array of artists that focus on various subjects and techniques to execute their work. The show will present fragments of traditional video art, aspects of performance based art, narrative experimental film, and vanguard documentary. The works have been placed in a chronological order to be viewed one after another. I feel that each piece will add to what synthesizes fragments of a larger whole. The chronological flow of each piece creates a perceptual module.
